Day 5 On the Road

We’ve clocked just over 2000 miles so far. The winds have been horrible, making for an unpleasant driving experience.  Sustained winds have been 15 to 20 mph  And often crosswinds, ugh.  Today the winds are again high, but it’s s tail wind so more pleasant.

We crossed the border yesterday and for once we did not get searched!   Last time we came to Canada, we were told to pull into a large building that had garage doors at either end.  Once we were parked in said building, the garage doors came down and we were trapped inside and told to exit our RV with Chena (our spoo). We spent the next hour  sitting in a large waiting room while customs searched our RV.  Though we knew we had no contraband aboard, ok maybe A liter or so too much booze 😂, it is still very unnerving!  We must look like desperados because we get searched almost every time we cross the border.

Yesterday we drove across the plains, fields and more fields and grain elevators.  The countryside is beautiful here.  Today we’ll pass thru Edmonton and tomorrow we’ll hit The Alaska Highway and our adventure will really begin! (Pardon the splotches on the photos, bug splats on the windshield 😁)

The Alaska Highway was built by the Army Corps of Engineers during WW II and is  about 1600 miles long.  The road was constructed in just 8 short months and is considered quite an engineering  feat.  Today, little, if any of the original road remains and it is a pleasant drive. Our first trip up the road was in 1995 and even since then, the road has improved.

Alaska here we come with big smiles on our faces!

  2. We found out before we drove the highway that my grandpa and grandma worked on one of the crews building it. My grandpa was a butcher and my grandma was one of the cooks. Have a great drive!
